As part of our continuing commitment to make a positive impact on our community’s youth, FSU Credit Union is proud to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend (BBBS) through the month of May. We’re donating $10 to BBBS for every eligible auto loan completed through FSU Credit Union as part of our Borrow 4 Less, Give Back More initiative.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend works to build relationships with the children in our community who are facing adversity; serving at-risk youth, age 6-18, in Florida’s Big Bend region.

Approximately 90 percent of youth served by BBBS come from low- to moderate-income households, and 80 percent live in a single-parent household. Additionally, more than half have an incarcerated parent.

BBBS offers both community- and school-based mentoring programs. The community-based mentoring program offers free or low-cost outings for bigs and littles to attend together. These outings often include trips to the park, sporting events, museum visits and other events hosted by BBBS affiliates.

The school-based mentoring program gives bigs the opportunity to make a positive impact on their littles in an educational setting, whether it’s in the classroom or on the playground. BBBS serves four elementary schools in the Tallahassee area: Astoria Park, Bond, Hartsfield and Oak Ridge.

As part of BBBS’s efforts, 97 percent of youth in the program are promoted to the next grade level, 92 percent improve or maintain a belief that they will graduate from high school and attend college, and 90 percent maintain or improve their academic performance.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend is an invaluable asset to our community,” FSU Credit Union CEO Chuck Adcock said. “We’re thrilled to support their mission of providing mentors and role models who build positive and impactful relationships with our local youth.”

On Friday, May 18, BBBS will hold its annual Big Champagne Bash at the Goodwood Carriage House. The black-tie gala is a fundraiser for the organization and features champagne, bourbon flights, cigar tasting, a full bar, food by For the Table, a life jazz ensemble, a DJ and dancing. Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased online at BigBendMentoring.org/Bash. Groups of 10 tickets receive a 20 percent discount.

BBBS is always looking for people eager to positively impact the underserved children of our community. By simply changing their perspective of what the world can offer, you can be instrumental in changing their lives for the better.
