FSU Credit Union is pleased to again support the Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy (TFLA) through its Borrow 4 Less – Give Back More program. $10 from every eligible new or refinanced auto loan made at FSU Credit Union in June will be donated to TFLA.
The Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy (TFLA) is a premier leadership program that provides teens with mentorship, job readiness training, financial literacy education and summer employment. This is an innovative eight-week program that provides two-weeks of job readiness training provided by the City of Tallahassee, that includes leadership training, career training, customer service training, financial literacy and education, and college campus enrichment. Eligible youth continue with six-weeks of employment opportunities to work a minimum of 20 hours weekly in a paid position. Employment is offered through the City of Tallahassee, private organizations, or non-profit organizations in the Tallahassee area.
TFLA affords over 200 participants the opportunity to work in positions that are enhanced with mentorship and guidance by their managers or supervisors. The TFLA program also consists of several components that take place during the two weeks prior to employment; including leadership training, career training, customer service training, financial literacy, and college campus enrichment. Pioneering partnerships with Florida A&M University, Florida State University, and Tallahassee Community College assist with enhancing youth exposure to college campuses through guided tours by collegiate ambassadors. Partnerships with these post-secondary schools also allow high quality education and job skills training through workshops presented by university personnel.
The TFLA program prioritizes opportunities for youth located in a target area of Tallahassee known as the “Promise Zone.” This area has been identified for the City’s highest levels of crime, having an overall poverty rate of 51.6 percent, and an overall unemployment rate three times greater than the City average. The City of Tallahassee recognizes the urgency and need in reaching out to at-risk youth, involving them with the program, and motivating and preparing them to enter the local workforce as productive members of the community.
Partnerships with FSU Credit Union and other collaborations around Tallahassee have played an instrumental role in TFLA being recognized by the National League of Cities as a recipient of the Cultural Diversity Award in Washington D.C. and recently the International City/County Management Association Awards Evaluation Panel selected the City’s Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy as a recipient of the organization’s Community Partnership Program Excellence Award being awarded in Baltimore in September.
